Improving Quality and Quantity of Food

In FY2016 we improved both the quality and quantity of food distributed to over 15,000 families.

We increased the quantity of food by 23% in FY2016 compared to the year prior.  Despite increasing the pounds of food given per family, we maintained our emphasis on high-quality foods.

95% of food procured in FY2016 qualified as nutrient-dense and protein-rich.  So what does that mean? Nutrient-dense and protein-rich foods include:

  • Whole grains
  • Meat and beans
  • Dairy and eggs
  • Canned and dried fruits and vegetables
  • Fresh produce
  • Frozen Produce

This includes over 12 pounds of fresh produce, purchased directly from a wholesaler.

So, where does all that food come from?

We purchase 44% of the food we distribute from our local food bank and produce wholesaler.  The remaining 56% of food is donated from rescue partners (18% of donated), food drives and individual donations (43%) USDA Commodities (35%), FEMA (3%), and TANF (<1%).
