A Note From Jennie: Reflecting on my journey so far

As I settle into my role as CEO, I have been continually struck by the depth of our programming and the heart behind it. What has blown me away most is the way we work with each and every individual client. We don’t just distribute food — we listen, we learn, and we tailor our services to their needs. For example, our Home Delivery participants literally place their grocery orders, and our staff and volunteers carefully select each item to ensure they get exactly what they want. It’s a labor-intensive model, but it is one that sets us apart — and one that is worth every ounce of effort.

I’ve also seen how carefully every program and decision is made with our community at the center. Our programs don’t emerge from a template. They are designed based on real needs, with input and feedback from those we serve. That level of respect is foundational to Beyond Hunger’s culture — and it’s what allows us to do this work in a way that truly honors our neighbors.

Another strength that deserves recognition is our nutrition work. Having dietitians on staff is rare among food pantries, but here it’s woven into everything we do. Their expertise allows us to offer medically tailored groceries and to provide nutrition education that supports healthier, longer lives. In fact, more than 90% of the food our clients receive falls into the “green” and “yellow” SWAP categories, meaning it is nutrient-dense and intentionally chosen to promote health. Combined with our health partnerships, this is the kind of innovation that puts Beyond Hunger on the map.

Of course, none of this would be possible without the incredible people who power this organization. I am in awe of the talent and dedication of our staff. Our board, donors, and volunteers continually show up with compassion and generosity. Together, they make our mission possible.

Even in the choices we make as an organization, I’ve seen our values in action. Whether it’s intentionally sourcing from vendors in Austin to serve our Austin clients, or choosing partnerships that reflect our commitment to dignity and respect, we consistently put our money where our mouth is. These decisions may cost more, but they speak volumes about who we are and what we stand for.

Looking ahead
My vision for Beyond Hunger is not to change what we are, but to deepen it. I want us to dream big — because our community will need us more than ever in the years ahead. Our role is to break down barriers, to innovate beyond traditional service models, and to ensure that every person who walks through our doors feels centered, respected, and heard.

The biggest challenge and opportunity before us is this: how do we grow while keeping our values of quality and dignity at the core of everything we do? I believe the answer lies in continuing to be innovative, in continuing to listen to our clients, and in reminding our community that they are part of the solution.

Whether through volunteering, donating, or simply sharing our story, our supporters are a vital part of this work. Together, we will meet the rising need. Together, we will ensure Beyond Hunger remains not just a pantry, but a partner in building healthier, more resilient lives.

I am humbled — more than words can capture — to lead this incredible agency. I promise to lean into the values that have long made Beyond Hunger such a special place, and to carry them forward as we dream big for the future.

With gratitude,
Jennie
