Beyond Hunger is harnessing the power of communities to end hunger. An award-winning direct service agency, we serve residents of 13 ZIP Codes on the West Side of Chicago and surrounding suburbs. Last year we provided critical food assistance and programming to over 65,000 individuals. Our energetic and fulfilling work environment is resourced by an operating budget of over $5 million, 20 full-time staff members, 4 part-time staff, 1 full-time VISTA member, over 1300 active volunteers—and possibly you.

Established in 2016, Beyond Hunger's Home Delivery program mission is focused on supporting neighbors who have difficulty visiting our physical food pantry. The program currently services about 350 households each month in Oak Park, River Forest and the Austin neighborhood of Chicago (60651/60644).

Job Summary:
The Home Delivery Program Assistant supports Beyond Hunger's Home Delivery program which delivers groceries to homebound and disabled adults in the near western suburbs and Chicago's Austin community. In this role, you will pick up and unload purchased food from grocery stores and businesses to help increase our food inventory for clients. You will support the Program Coordinators as we prep and provide free groceries to older adults in the community. Central to this role is dedication to our core values of Respect, Equity, Community, and Accountability through disciplined and compassionate application of all agency and federal policies.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Work with Home Delivery Program Manager, Home Delivery Program Coordinator, and Home Delivery Procurement Coordinator to determine daily needs and implement best practices. You will also cross-train to support the Food Pantry operations as needed.
- Maintain a welcoming and safe environment for clients, volunteers, and staff by modeling respectful communication in all situations.
- Assure daily operational needs are communicated effectively to volunteers. Train volunteers as needed for deliveries, rescues, and donations.
- Lead on-site Home Delivery volunteer shifts, working alongside volunteers to ensure each shift runs smoothly. Lead virtual new caller orientations each month to prepare volunteers for client outreach.
- Load, unload, and deliver packaged groceries to homebound clients living in Chicago's Austin neighborhood, Oak Park, River Forest, and nearby west suburban communities.
- Operate a delivery van to transport food pick-ups and participant deliveries.
- Foster positive relationships with clients when delivering groceries in-person and taking grocery orders over the phone.
- Lead off-site volunteers regarding home delivery protocols, as assigned at senior buildings throughout Oak Park.
- Regularly communicate and update any changes to participant information, such as phone numbers and addresses.
Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent
- Have a valid driver's license for at least 3 consecutive years with an excellent record
- Experience operating a non-CDL commercial van (preferred)
- Food sanitation licensure or ability to achieve one once hired (Beyond Hunger will pay fees)
- Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds and an ability to perform all duties associated with a physically strenuous position
- Ability to stay calm, communicate effectively, and resolve issues during shifts
- Excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work with and encourage interaction between people of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds
- Knowledge of Oak Park, River Forest, and Chicago's Austin neighborhood highly preferred. Residents living in Beyond Hunger's service area encouraged to apply
- Bi-lingual skills (English/Spanish) highly preferred
Environment:
Multi-level workspace that is not fully accessible to the mobility impaired. You must be physically capable of walking up and down stairs, able to lift at least 50 pounds, and be on your feet throughout your work day. Workplace is a smoke and drug free environment. Equal opportunity employer.
