A day of service devoted to the memory of Martin Luther King Jr.

Barack Obama quote

When President Barack Obama designated Martin Luther King Jr. Day as a Day of Service, it inspired our country to think of others in need, in King's memory. Our AmeriCorps members commit themselves to a year of service, impacting the lives of others. We are proud of the work they are doing to help local families achieve food security, ensuring we all have a full table each night.

On this day when we honor the world-changing work of Martin Luther King Jr, we are proud to introduce these future leaders in service.

Rosie Wakely

"I grew up in Oak Park, so serving with Beyond Hunger gives me the opportunity to give back to the community that built me. I love forming relationships with clients and learning more about ways to connect people with resources and combat food insecurity. I am super grateful for all the volunteers and staff who have made my first month here special!"

-Rosie Wakely, Disabled and Aging Population Specialist

Tori Londrigan

"AmeriCorps is such an important program because it acknowledges that national security includes the health and safety of our communities at home, not just overseas. I joined AmeriCorps to participate in what I believe to be a fundamental human experience — helping others in need. I’m ecstatic to be on a team with folks who share the same goals and values here at Beyond Hunger."

-Tori Londrigan, Pantry Supervisor

Shefali Parikh

"I chose AmeriCorps as a way to give back to the community and be able to help foster a better environment for those that do not have the same access to food and shelter as many of us do."

- Shefali Parikh, Community Nutrition Program Specialist
