Hiring: Summer Kids Food Program Intern

Responsibilities

POSITION PURPOSE

• The Summer Meals intern will help increase the number of children receiving free summer meals by increasing repeat visits to Meet Up & Eat Up (our open Summer Meals site). S/he will help ensure future program growth in all Summer Meals sites by developing a system for obtaining feedback from children, their parents, and teachers.

DUTIES

• Build a welcoming and engaging environment at Meet Up & Eat Up so that children want to return.
  • Assist with planning, recruitment, and execution of age-appropriate programing such as arts and crafts, physical activities, story time, movie time, etc. ii. Greet children and families warmly; learn names of participants; manage minor conflicts and communicate with staff to trouble-shoot solutions.
  • Facilitate orderly sign-in.
• Oversee distribution of meals.
  • Learn all food sanitation and ISBE protocols.
  • Manage distribution of meals at each site based on its unique requirements.   iii. Train and support volunteers regarding distribution protocol.
  • Assist with the daily physical set up and break-down. 
• Manage data and evaluation
  • Establish a process and collection tools to gather impact data and feedback from participants, families, and teachers. 
  • Track and submit meal site data daily.

COMMUNITY IMPACT

• By increasing the number of children attending Meet Up & Eat Up, the Summer Meals intern will help decrease child hunger in the community.  
• The Summer Meals intern will expand awareness of Oak Park River Forest Food Pantry and deepen community engagement through outreach and data collection.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications and experience:

• Ability and desire to work with children from age 3-18.
• College level work in one or more of these fields: Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education, Secondary Education, Child Psychology, Athletic Training, Counseling, Library Science, Physical Education, Sports and Recreation, Research Methodology. 
• Ability to lead activities across a range of age groups. 
• Comfortable working with children, parents, and volunteers from diverse backgrounds.
• Experience developing and/or administering qualitative research (surveys, focus groups, etc.)
• Exceptional interpersonal and problem-solving skills.
• Strong oral and written communication skills.
• Excellent organizational and time-management skills.
• Knowledge of Microsoft Office and Windows based computer application and database management j.           Creative, strategic, and analytical thinker.
• Bi-lingual skills (English/Spanish) are a plus.
• Food Safety Manager certified is a plus.

Learning Objectives

1. CAREER DEVELOPMENT
   • The Summer Meals intern will have ample opportunity to convert theories of child development, research methodology, or community engagement into real life practice.  S/he will develop a working knowledge of non-profit program management and assessment.
2. SKILL DEVELOPMENT
   • The Summer Intern will develop skills in program assessment and implementation.  S/he will refine time management and interpersonal communication skills. Critical thinking skills will also be honed.
3. PERSONAL GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT
   • Working with a wide variety of people—children, parents, volunteers, teachers, ISBE staff—will enhance interpersonal confidence and comfort.  In addition, developing an assessment protocol will increase the student’s ability to think critically and in culturally responsive ways.

Terms of Employment

Applicants must complete a criminal background check and child abuse clearance.

ELIGIBILITY

• Be a currently enrolled, undergraduate student who will be returning to college as a full-time (12 credit hours) sophomore, junior or senior in the fall of 2018.

• Submit written enrollment verification from their college or university confirming the student’s enrollment status to Iowa Campus Compact (student ID cards and/or phone calls are not sufficient documentation).

• Must attend Illinois State Board of Education training.

• Have a valid driver’s license. 

WORK SCHEDULE & CONDITIONS

• This full-time position starts Monday, June 3^rd, 2019 and ends Friday, August 16^th, 2018. This position is not eligible for sick, vacation, and holiday leave during employment.

• Work hours are normally 8:00 AM – 3:00 PM Monday – Friday.  Some flexibility with start/stop time may be needed, depending on the needs of the program.  Roughly ½ of the day will be spent at the meal sites, with the remaining portion of the day in program assessment and data management at the pantry.

• Periodic travel between summer meal sites is required. All sites are located in Oak Park, IL.

• The applicant must be physically capable of carrying, transporting, and setting up supplies and program equipment. Must be able to lift 25 pounds.

BENEFITS

• SALARY. The individual shall be compensated a $3000 - $4000 salary (dependent on hours worked) distributed bi-weekly in equal amounts for the duration of employment.

EVALUATIONS

The employee will receive an evaluation of their performance at the end of their employment from their direct supervisor. The evaluation also includes a self-evaluation and program evaluation.
