Families with children are much more likely to be in food insecure. As of 2024, 14 million children in the U.S. live in food insecure households, with 1 in 5 Cook County children being at risk for hunger.
Our programs focus on providing healthy foods to individuals of all ages. For kids, this includes:
- Partnering with local schools through YEMBA to provide food demonstrations and snacks to children in after-school programs.
- This program is currently run by Beyond Hunger's Nutrition Education team, providing dietetic interns an opportunity to develop nutritious, kid-friendly recipes and hands-on nutrition education demos.
-
Partnering with Oak Park Education Foundation through BASE CAMP, and with Oak Park/River Forest High School through their summer school programs.
-
Beyond Hunger has assisted in providing nutritious lunches and snacks to participants who would normally receive free or reduced-price lunches during the school year.
-
As of 2026, these programs have become stable enough for partners to manage independently.
